This year (2019) I had the pleasure of meeting Kevin Millward. Kevin contacted me as he had some Smallthorne related documents and photos from his family history. A post about Joseph Millward on the Smallthorne History Facebook group proved popular and generated quite a bit of discussion. Kevin visited a couple of times, once briefly and then a proper visit where he demonstrated his knowledge and also his passion for local history.

His first photographic contribution was to do with the Coal and Clay race run from the former Chatterley Whitfield Mining Museum. These evoked a lot of memories for locals who partook and Kevin was also involved in the manufacture of the medals as he was a manger on Royal Doulton.

Kevin left a great deal of photographs with regard to his family and these showed some interesting aspects of the area that would have otherwise been lost. As a poet myself I was also interested in a book of poetry written by Harold Mountford, one of Kevin’s ancestors.

There was along with the family, local and social history a collection of photographs showing his other passion of collecting vintage items including restored motorcycles.

Hopefully our communication and friendship will continue and I must express my thanks for his time, knowledge and for sharing these items with the website.

Please be respectful that these items belong to the family and should not be shared without the relevant permission. Please take time to look through and I am sure if there are any questions we can do our best to find answers.

Thank you

Barry Ashley
