Can you help Jane Tomkinson with her family tree research?
MADAM, – I have been researching my family history for a few years.
The search for the Tomkinson side of my family has brought me to Stoke-on-Trent, in particular to Burslem, Cobridge, Hanley, Smallthorne and Kidsgrove.
I have written to quite a few people with the surname Tomkinson in the area, hoping that someone may have heard of the family that I am working on.
I did receive a good response, however, no-one had heard of or knew anything about the family. I knew it was a shot in the dark because of how far back the dates go, but someone may have remembered something. Stories being passed and things. I have also done a lot of research into the area.
My great-great-grandparents were Samuel and Lucy Tomkinson (née Heath, born in around 1855 and died in 1939). Their children were William (born 1876), Albert, Samuel, Lucy, Martha, Frank, Elizabeth, Gerty and Sarah.
William was my great-grandfather. He married in 1898 to Hannah James, but sadly died in 1899 aged 23. A few months later, in 1900, Hannah gave birth to his son, William.
Hannah remarried to Stephen Mills Hancock in 1913. William Jnr married Doris Woolliscroft in 1926.
Doris passed away in 1929 and is buried with Stephen Hancock. William went on to marry Betty Cooper in Tamworth.
I am hoping that in publishing my letter and the photographs enclosed, I will be able to reach a bigger audience and find out what happened to the Tomkinson family.
